Ten minutes into a discovery call, the buyer is saying all the right things. Budget is approved. The timeline works. Every box on the call plan is checked. Yet your rep notices something: each time the conversation turns to rollout, the buyer’s voice brightens and he mentions “our ops lead” again. Instead of moving on to the next scripted question, she follows that feeling. “It sounds like your operations lead really cares about this. What would a win look like for her?” The buyer lights up, shares the story behind the project and offers to bring the ops lead to the next meeting. The conversation that follows is warmer, faster and full of energy.
Nothing in the call script prompted that question. Her intuition did. And every rep on your team has the same capacity.
Your reps were born with this
Intuition is not a skill set. It’s our natural fight-or-flight system at play: the built-in inner knowing that picks up on what’s happening around us before conscious thought catches up. We all have it. We are all born with it. Some people simply learn to ignore it.
Intuition isn’t reserved for the selected few. Each one of us is born with it, but what we do with it makes the difference. That’s why intuition training for sales teams isn’t about handing reps something new. It’s about helping them reconnect with what they already have, strengthen it and let it guide direction in the conversation first, before the process, the logistics and the analysis come in.
Why great reps tune it out
Sales teams are busy people. Reps juggle call plans, qualification frameworks, CRM fields and the next question on the list. All of that has value. But when attention is fixed on what to ask next, it’s easy to talk right past what you’re sensing in the moment: the pause, the shift in tone, the stakeholder who suddenly leans in.
Your best performers tend to do something different. They notice those moments and act on them. The good news is that this isn’t a rare talent. It’s natural intuition, and it grows stronger every time a rep listens to it.
What changes when reps let intuition lead
- They hear the question behind the question. Reps respond to what the buyer means, not just what they said.
- They find the believers. Titles tell you who signs. Energy tells you who believes, and intuition picks up energy first.
- They adapt in real time. Pace, tone and focus shift to fit the person on the call instead of the script.
- They build trust faster. Buyers feel understood, and conversations move forward with momentum.
Your sales process still matters. Intuition sets the direction; the process and the data then plan the how.
Try this this week: the three-word listening drill
This simple drill helps reps notice their intuition, trust it and let it lead on live calls. It takes almost no extra time.
- Pause before the call (60 seconds). Put your phone down, take three slow breaths and ask yourself, “What do I already sense about this buyer?” Write one line. Don’t edit it.
- Jot three words when something shifts. During the call, keep a notepad nearby. When you notice a pause, a change in pace or energy lifting, write a three-word note, such as “lit up: onboarding.” No analysis yet.
- Follow one note out loud. Once per call, pick the note that pulls at you most and gently name it: “I noticed you lit up when we talked about onboarding. Tell me more about that.”
- Capture what you know before the CRM. Right after the call, read your notes and ask, “What do I know now that wasn’t said in words?” Write one sentence. Then update the CRM and plan your next steps.
- Share one moment on Friday. In your team huddle, each rep shares one time they followed their intuition this week and what it opened up. Hearing these stories helps the whole team trust their own inner knowing.
Sales leaders can model this too. Start your next deal review by asking each rep, “What does your gut tell you about this buyer?” before anyone opens the forecast.
A small taste of what Colby does with sales teams
The three-word drill is a simplified piece of the work Colby Rebel does in her Reading the Room sales training. With teams, she goes much deeper, using The REBEL Read: five signals reps learn to read in every buyer conversation (Reality, Edge, Believers, Energy and Landing). Sessions use role-play and your team’s real call scenarios, and they sit on top of the sales methodology you already use, so reps get more from every conversation without learning a new system.
Colby also works with sales leaders so they can reinforce these habits in coaching and deal reviews, which keeps the momentum going long after the workshop. A former public accountant, she respects the numbers and shows teams how intuition makes those numbers work harder.
